Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we approach the end of the term, I want to express my gratitude for your continued support in fostering our school's positive learning environment.

We have had many successes and celebrations that make us proud of your children and in knowing that our teachers make a real difference.

This term in academic excellence, our learners have demonstrated remarkable dedication and progress academically, thanks to their hard work and our dedicated staff.

For our extracurricular activities, the learners have excelled in showcasing their talents and enthusiasm. Many memorable moments in assemblies, on the sporting field and the unforgettable Musicale. Our learners have had great experiences at athletics carnivals, incursions and excursions including camp for our middle years, all ending with a throwback Thursday mufti – lots of fun!

Our sense of community has grown even stronger. Your participation in events and meetings has made a significant impact. We are thankful for parent/carers who accessed our MiniLit showcase, parent information evenings, for those who attended 100 Days of Kindergarten, Book Week, Father’s Day breakfast and enjoyed our classrooms as we opened the doors for Education Week.

Of course, a huge THANK YOU to our P & C for all the work they do in ensuring all of our learners benefit from everything we do here at school with fundraising and time given; and the fun and success of the Trivia night topped off a great term.

Deputy Principal's Message

Wow what a busy time we have had during Term 3. We have had a number of events occur which have provided our learners with the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills. Some of these events include K-2 Athletics carnival, Book Week, Stage 2 camp, Zone Athletics carnival and Musicale. Our learners have upheld our school values of participating, being safe and respectful during these events and they should be proud of their achievements. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break.

Sun Safe

As the weather is starting to heat up a reminder to make sure students have their hats in their bags each day. It is also important that our SCPS students stay well hydrated. The best way to do this is for our students to bring in a clearly labelled drink bottle which they can refill throughout the day. The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend drinking plenty of water and choosing plain water in preference to other drinks. The daily fluid intake is between 1.2ltr-1.9ltr for children (depending on age) with the majority of this intake consisting of plain water. Please make sure that the bottle is not made of glass as this is a safety concern when students accidently drop them and they shatter.

Spotlight on Students

The school recently received information about two of our students from the organistion called Kids Giving Back.

Lexie E and Lola B were recently involved in a community program with 1400 other young people who produced over 8500 hot meals, salads, fruit kebabs, breakfast boxes, snack packs and care packs with empathetic, positive messages, which were distributed to 15 charities around Sydney. They displayed exceptional leadership qualities, compassion, and a strong sense of civic responsibility.

Well done to these two students!

Class of the Week - KD

KD has had an extremely busy and exciting term!

We’ve participated in a variety of activities, including our 100 days of Kindy celebration, our Father’s Day morning, the Book Parade, the athletics carnival and our fabulous excursion to Golden Ridge Farm.

What's 4D Been Up To?

This term, we have been learning about writing persuasive texts and the different between a fact and an opinion using sloths as our subject.

We had so much fun learning about sloths, so we decided to draw one. We created our artwork using a video on YouTube as a guide. We first drew the outline in lead pencil, then traced over it with a black texta. After that, we used coloured pencils and crayons and used different shading techniques to create the look of fur and designs on the branches.

We think you'll agree that they look so cute!

5/6H - 2023 So Far.....

In Dance lessons 5/6H have been learning about different ways movement can be used to communicate with the audience. We have developed our movement skills and learnt how to create dances to match the music.

We also wanted to celebrate an amazing achievement in Australian history this year. The Matilda’s performance in the FIFA Women’s World Cup is the furthest any Australian side has gone at a senior World Cup. This World Cup has been a pivotal moment for women’s soccer and women’s sport in Australia. Their fourth-place finish is definitely something to dance to!

We incorporated our dance to the official song of the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. 5/6H all worked together to make a dance that matched the song. All our ideas were incorporated in the dance and because of everyone’s hard work we were able to pull together an amazing performance.

We enjoyed making our assembly item in honour of the Matilda’s and are happy that we could bring recognition to this huge achievement. Here are some photos and videos of our wonderful dance! 

Kindergarten Farm Excursion

We had so much fun going to Golden Ridge Animal Farm for our Kindy Excursion recently.

The students were able to hold little chicks, ducklings and bunnies. They also had fun feeding the baby goats (kids) and lambs. A highlight was milking Hazel the cow!

The Farmer told us about the animals and how important farms are for providing food, milk and produce.

The bus trip there and back was also enjoyable, as we travelled over the Harbour Bridge and saw our beautiful Sydney Harbour.

Kindergarten Team

Stage 2 Camp

Stage 2 Camp was a great success, full of fun and excitement. The students were a delight to take away and eager to try all activities. The teachers worked very hard behind the scenes to make it all happen, as well as during camp.  

What I loved about camp were the activities. Each activity was something new and everyone tried their best. The people that ran the activities were so nice! I liked the sugar glider, canoeing and way more! The food was so yummy. I was sad to leave, and if I had the choice, I would go again. Poppy N

My favourite thing about camp was all of the different activities and trying different things. I loved it when we went canoeing, sugar gliding and when we went on a bush walk. Bella K

My favourite thing about camp was that they pushed us out of our comfort zone and through our limits. For example, mountain biking was a little scary and it was on a high mountain, but I loved it. Cooper A

One of my favourite things about camp was canoeing for the first time and you got to see lots of fish on the way. High ropes was amazing! It was like running then flying then landing in style. Damper tastes too brilliant to describe! Stan B

My favourite things about camp were canoeing and making damper. During canoeing we were having fun and getting wet! During damper making the smoke burned our eyes out but the damper tasted good with honey. Andrei S

What I loved about camp was when I did the Donkey Kong high ropes. We had to climb up a ladder then balance on a beam. The sugar glider was also lots of fun. I was floating through the air. My heart was pounding! Kailey D

What I loved about camp was there was a wide variety of activities and you could choose whether you wanted to do the activity or not. There was also amazing food! The cabins were well cleaned, and the instructors were really nice. Ben M

I loved doing the Donkey Kong activity because it was super high and fun. I also loved the yummy food they gave us. They gave us lots of food like chicken schnitzel, they also provided us with fruit. I loved doing orienteering with my friends. It was amazing! Helena M

I loved canoeing because my teacher and I had fun together. I also loved the sugar glider because it was fun to swing around and twist in the ropes. Another activity at camp I loved was the bush walk. I loved this activity because trying to make damper was hard and fun. I also loved learning fun facts, like did you know the church at the camp is 225 years old. Braxton D

During camp I got to bond with my friends more and learn cool things about them I didn’t know before. I loved all the activities, but I had a few favourites. My favourites were orienteering because I learnt important skills and Donkey Kong because it was super fun, and I came out of my comfort zone. The morning teas were super delicious, especially the jam doughnut! Lucy D

The fun things about camp were the sugar glider because we all had to work together, and playing in the cabins because we could talk and play games. We had so much fun! Lennon S

Kindergarten Public Speaking

On August 31, Kindergarten held its Public Speaking finals. Each class selected one student to participate: Thomas M from KA, Chloe J from KD, and Jem R from KS.

These students had to deliver both prepared and impromptu speeches, showcasing their amazing public speaking skills. The adjudicators faced a challenging decision in choosing a winner, but in the end, Thomas M emerged victorious.

PSSA Winter Competition

South Coogee Public School has had a fantastic Winter Competition for PSSA this year! As our last game was on Friday 15 September, students finished the competition off with pride!

We would like to congratulate all teams for their dedication and commitment to their teams over Terms 2 and 3. Students have had a wonderful time competing in sports including Netball, Soccer and Rugby League.

South Coogee has had some outstanding results this year. Both Senior Blue and Senior White Netball teams this year have won the competition as undefeated premiers! We are so unbelievably proud of our netballers as this is not easy to accomplish.

Also in the Rugby League competition our Junior team won joint Premiers with Banksmeadow. What a huge accomplishment for our rugby league players!

We want to congratulate all students for another successful Winter PSSA competition.

Well done to all our PSSA students!

Zone Athletics Carnival

On Friday 8 September Ms Owen, Ms Brissenden and Miss Harris attended the Zone Cross Country Carnival with 60 of our qualified students, held at ES Marks Athletics Track.

It was a cold and rainy day and our students were soaking wet during the carnival but they had such impressive results on the day and we are so proud of them for representing our school with pride.

We had multiple students representing our school in 100m, 200m, 800, 1500m races, Long Jump, Discus and Shot Put.

Unfortunately due to the weather, High Jump did not go ahead on the day, however some of our High Jump students attended Rainbow Street PS one afternoon to finish the competition.

South Coogee Public School achieved fantastic results and many of our students have now qualified to attend the Regional Athletics Carnival being held in Term 4, Wednesday 11 October at SOPAC. This is such a huge achievement to make it to this level, and we wish our representatives luck on the day.

What a fun week at SCPS!

On Monday Stages 2&3 enjoyed their time with children's author Morris Gleitzman, the Book Fair has been very popular, and today's Book Parade was a HUGE success. It was thoroughly enjoyed by students, staff and parents alike.

We are looking forward to tomorrow's Father's Day Breakfast and Classroom Visits. Photos from these events will be shared next week.

1T News

1T has been learning about Auslan and Braille in literacy these past few weeks after reading the book 'BOY'.

We have learnt many sentences in sign language including “at school I read and write”. We have also been writing colours in Braille.

Learning sign language has been challenging as there are so many signs and so much to remember! It is extremely interesting to learn about sign language and Braille as it gives us a new perspective on reading and writing.

Things 1T loved about learning Auslan:

Mirabelle - Because we get to learn how to talk in different ways

Sebastian - We get to learn a new way to talk and it’s fun using our hands

5/6N News

Over the past two weeks, the 5/6N classroom has been a hive of activity! Students have been enthusiastically engaged in exciting learning experiences in preparation for Book Week and open classrooms for the Father's Day morning tea.

This term we have been focusing on writing Informational Texts. Students have shown great enthusiasm in applying the writing skills they have learned to research, edit and present their work on the class writing wall.

This week 5/6 N began composing their speeches for our school public speaking competition in Week 8. Students have chosen topics they are passionate about and have expertly drawn upon the persuasive devices they learned in Term 2 to craft their speeches.

In Visual art, students have been learning about Pop Art and have worked hard to perfect their drawing skills to create portraits of their fathers or important male figures in the style of Roy Lichenstein. They then used paint or markers to colour their expressive artworks. They also had fun writing acrostic poems and choosing fitting adjectives to describe their special person.
