Term 3 Covid-smart Measures Update
Term 3 Covid-smart Measures Update
1D has had a productive term in Mathematics, exploring new ideas and developing more efficient strategies for working out answers to number problems.
Using hands-on Mathematics games and concrete materials, the learners have been encouraged to explore number patterns, think strategically, represent their own ideas, and explain how their answers were obtained.
What do 1D learners think about Mathematics?
Mathematics is fun because we get to play number games and use the equipment. Scarlett D
If we keep practising, we become faster at solving tricky number problems. Alistair W
Maths is fun because we do lots of different activities, and we learn by doing lots of sums. Tiago A-V
We have been learning lots of different ways to add, subtract and multiply numbers. Harriet V
In Maths we can learn by playing number games and collaborating with each other. Koa R
Maths is fun because we get to play games and learn more by trying new things. Jackson M
We are learning more because we challenge ourselves when we are adding and subtracting. Alfred S
Maths is fun because we get to do lots of multiplication and division activities. Tilly G
Maths is very good for your brain. Jakobi A
After 2 long years of waiting, we were able to once again celebrate book week in true South Coogee style. It was a wonderful celebration of reading and books.
Amongst the events students enjoyed throughout the week were two author visits. Andrew Traucki, a Randwick local, spoke to our 3-6 students about his love of myths and legends. He shared his techniques for illustrating interesting characters and explained his journey in writing his new series of humorous books-Mashed Myths. Next we had Ursula Dubosarsky, the 2020-21 Australian Children’s Laureate and author of over 61 books, visit our school. She had the students from Kindergarten to Year 6 completely engaged during her presentations. Ursula told students about the real experiences that inspired the stories she’s written and she narrated a dramatisation of her book March of the Ants with the help of our students.
The Scholastic Book Fair was also back on in the library with a huge response from the school community. It was our biggest book fair ever! Thank you to all the families who came along and purchased from the fair. We will be receiving over $2,000 in commission to purchase new books for our school library. Incredible!
Perhaps our most anticipated Book Week event was the book parade. Our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students were especially excited to experience their first South Coogee parade. They were not disappointed. It was a fabulous whole school event with all the staff getting into the spirit of Book Week by joining the students in dressing up. The hall was full of colourful and creative costumes. Each class had their moment to parade and our Kindergarten students were joined by their Year 4 buddies for their walk around.
There were mini-interviews and photo opportunities.
There was music, singing and dancing.
But most importantly, there was an overwhelming atmosphere of happiness as we all celebrated being together again as a whole school community.

Indigenous Literacy Day was on Wednesday September 7 2022. It is a celebration of the diversity of First Nations Peoples' Stories, Cultures and Languages.
Some classes watched a National digital event online featuring a lively group of children in remote Milikapiti and Jilkminggan in the Northern Territory, sharing their Stories, Cultures and Languages.
Music icon, Jessica Mauboy, and author and performer, Gregg Dreise, also featured in the presentation.
Students joined in saying words in different indigenous languages and learning the actions to some songs.
A huge congratulations to our very talented Senior Dance Ensemble who performed at the State Dance Festival ‘BLOOM’ at the Seymour Centre last Monday night. They all did our school very proud. Our colourful and fun performance of ‘Can't stop the Beat’ was a hit with the audience and we were praised by the organisers on how well our kids managed themselves and confidently gave the performance their all.
A huge thank you to the parents for all the planning and picking up and dropping off - especially Leigh Hayim, Jen Ball and Nikki Goldsmith, who helped transport dancers to and from the rehearsal.
A special mention to our very clever dance teacher Olivia Causer for doing a fantasic job!
Year 6 students Lexie (5/6F) and Brooklyn (5/6F) recently performed in the junior State Wind Band as a part of The Arts Unit’s Festival of Instrumental Music. Brooklyn and Lexie both played flute and learnt three pieces of music in their own time. They joined other students from across NSW for two days of intensive rehearsals in Lewisham and sound checks at Town Hall and The Sydney Opera House.
The festival opened with the Jacaranda Concert at Sydney Town Hall and closed with the Mimosa Concert at the Sydney Opera House. The concerts featured hundreds of public school students from all over NSW performing works including J S Bach and special commission pieces from talented Australian composers.
Lexie and Brooklyn enjoyed sharing their talent and performing live in prestigious venues for the first time in two years.
Lexie: My favourite part about participating in State Wind Band was making new friends and meeting people from all around the state.
Brooklyn: I liked learning new pieces and playing with a variety of instruments
Last week the Defence students sold Legacy Badges before school each morning, and some Stage 3 students went to Coogee Beach to sell badges to the public.
All the students who volunteered were very responsible and respectful, and made me very proud. Thank you to everyone who helped, and a big thank you to everyone who purchased an item. Next year we will make sure that we have more wristbands and teddies!
The money raised from selling Legacy Badges goes towards helping families of veterans who gave their lives or health serving our country. Together South Coogee Public School raised $1897!! This is a huge amount, and we can’t thank you enough for everyone supporting the Defence students in this endeavour.

Last Wednesday, Year 3 were excited to have Swans players Tom Hickey and Harry Cunningham, and AFL staff, come to visit.
The Swans players talked about their background, and students were able to ask questions. Year 3 then participated in a skill session with the players and got to show off their kicking and handballing skills.
I have recently received a lovely email from Gabrielle Morrissey Hansen, CEO of the Kids Give Back initiative.
Wonderful learners from our school Amelia Cartwright & Elsie Green gave their time to undertake a range of activities that contributed to meet the needs of vulnerable people in our community. It is especially heart-warming to know these young members of our school community chose to spend some of their holiday time volunteering to help others in need.
A round of applause!
“These students are among over 500 young people who produced over 13,500 hot meals, soup, salads, fruit kebabs, breakfast boxes, snack packs, care packs and decorated tote bags, with empathetic, positive messages, which were distributed to 13 charities around Sydney. Volunteering in the July school holidays was especially valuable as we held a twice weekly soup kitchen, making and handing out almost 1000 servings of soup in the cold and rain, to those who needed warm food and support. Your student volunteers were also especially helpful in folding and packing new clothes for over 12,000 vulnerable people, many of whom were affected by this year’s floods. We deeply appreciate their service to others and the kindness they have extended.”

A huge thank you to Cricket NSW who have engaged our Stage 2 and 3 students with some fun skill-building activities over the past 2 weeks.
The students were able to practice simple throw/catch, bowling, batting and fielding in a variety of games and challenges.
Everyone enjoyed the experiences with the knowledgeable coaches and learnt a lot.

At Flower Power, we believe that gardening has significant benefits for everyone, regardless of age. That’s why our FREE Kids’ Gardening Class program will be running these school holidays. These classes are designed to foster a love of gardening early in life, spark curiosity about the natural world, develop creative thinking and encourage kids to get off their devices and into the great outdoors.
During the classes, budding gardeners will enjoy a guided tour of our nursery where they’ll learn all about the importance of bees to our gardens and our lives. They’ll then pot up their very own seedling to take home and care for. All materials are supplied, however children under 5 must be supervised by an adult at all times.
Dates and times
Our Kids’ Gardening Classes are completely free to all children and will be run at 11am every weekday during the school holiday period: Monday 26 - Friday 30 September and Tuesday 4 – Friday 7 October 2022. Classes run for one hour. No classes will run on the Labour Day Public Holiday, Monday 3 October.
Locations
Kids’ Gardening Classes are held at all 10 Flower Power Garden Centres across Sydney. Click here to find your nearest location.

On Friday 12th August, representatives from South Coogee Public School attended the ESPSSA Zone Athletics Carnival at ES Marks Athletics Field.
Students enjoyed competing against other local schools in the Eastern Suburbs Zone. We had a number of students competing in track and field events throughout the day and we are so proud of their determination and good sportsmanship demonstrated between their competitors.
It was a VERY exciting finish to the day with our relay teams finishing with such outstanding results! Our Junior Girls, Junior Boys and Senior Girls all came first in their heats and our Senior Boys finished a close second!
Our students were beautifully behaved and really represented our school with pride.
Results will be out soon with any students who have made it through to the Regional Athletics Carnival being held on the 14th September.

So far this term we have done lots of interesting craft in Defence Kids Club. Students have enjoyed making stained glass window mandalas, peg board pictures, paper towel absorption art, and mini booklets for Book Week. Our defence kids love having time to catch up with their defence peers and friends.
Our senior defence students have been working on our Legacy Pen Pals program. This is where the students are writing letters to Legacy Widows. We also made some cards to send to one lovely lady for her birthday. This is a great way for students to connect with our past and learn about the sacrifices people have made for our country.
Next week is Legacy Week, some grade 5/6 students will be selling Legacy badges down at Coogee Beach on Tuesday & Wednesday morning from around 9:45. If your grade 5/6 student would like to help, please give them permission via the Operoo that was sent out. If you are a uniformed member who would like to help the students stand out on the beach, please email, or call me for more information. We will also be selling badges at the school gates all week in the mornings. Please feel free to come by and support us. All year levels are welcome to help selling badges on school grounds.
Please see below information from the NSW Department of Education that I received this morning to update families on the current guidelines and Covid Safe measures in place in our schools for the remainder of this term

We each got to make a poster to showcase to our families as well as sing the song “Let’s all have a party”.
Then we got to relax and have a picnic with our family and friends!
In Literacy we have been learning about bumble bees.
Here are a few facts we have learnt.
Bees have five eyes! - Oscar
The Queen bee builds a new nest every year- Chloe
Bumble bees are the size of a jellybean! - Samuel.
We had so much fun creating our Bee artwork with our year 4 Buddies!
“MATILDA”
On Thursday, July 21, all the South Coogee band students went off on a bus to Brigidine College, Randwick to see their performance of “Matida”. We loved it!! The show was fantastic and the actors and singers so professional. It was hard to believe that they were high school students.
We sat right in front of the orchestra and it was outstanding. They played the entire score of the performance. Hopefully we will be as good as them one day.
The teachers would like to congratulate all the students on their excellent behaviour and beautiful manners. We were so proud of you all and hope you always remember that day.
Mrs. Horne, Mrs. Leal and Shelley.

It’s such an exciting time to be at school with so many wonderful things happening.
Talking, playing, learning, having fun and creating are a big part of each day. KS children have enjoyed meeting new friends, collaborating with others and learning how to work in groups. It’s been an exciting time!
KS went on their first excursion this week. Here is a joint construction of what we did:
On Tuesday all of Kindy went to the Botanical Gardens for an excursion. We travelled by bus to get there.
When we arrived at the gates, we walked into the gardens and had our recess. Then Francine showed us how to make a habitat for a living thing. We learnt about Living things and Minibeasts.
Next, we saw trees, insects, birds and flowers. We watched a water dragon sunbaking on a bridge.
Then we listened to a story about daffodils and planted our own daffodil. After that, we played on the grass and ate our lunch.
Finally, it was time to get back on the bus and travel back to school.
We had an amazing time at the gardens for our first excursion.
We had a busy Term 2 in Defence Kids Club. Students got involved in lots of crafts including egg carton animals, watercolour painting, dream catchers and popsicle stick people and animals.
Some students in years 1-3 got involved in the kidSMART program where we learnt about our emotions and tools for resilience. We have our last session next Tuesday.
Defence Kids Club is such a great place to check in with all the kids and see how they are doing. Everyone has a great time making things and chatting.

Stage 2 Camp was a great success, full of fun and excitement. The students were a delight to take away and eager to try all activities. The teachers worked very hard behind the scenes to make it all happen, as well as during camp.
We loved camp! We really enjoyed kayaking and canoeing and spending time in the cabins with our friends. Getting to know each other outside of school was really great. We also loved the challenges with orienteering and trying to work out the answers. Violet and Maya
We loved most of the activities at camp. I (Grace) really liked archery and trying to get the target. I (Abby) liked the scootering and making damper. The food was delicious, more so the breakfast rather than dinner. Abby and Grace

Great news - South Coogee PS is participating in Jump Rope for Heart – a fantastic physical activity and fundraising program that the Heart Foundation has been running for 40 years. It’s a great way for your child to keep fit and learn new skills, but it also helps raise funds for vital heart research and education programs.
Since Jump Rope for Heart started in 1983, schools like ours have raised more than $104 million for the Heart Foundation’s lifesaving work.
Students will be skipping throughout the term in PE classes and during their lunch breaks. During this time you can share your fundraising page with family and friends to help raise money for this great cause.
We will hold our school Jump Off Day on Tuesday, November 15th. This will mark the end of the program and is a chance for students to show off their newly learned skills.
We will be officially launching the program in Week 1, Term 4. However, you can get ahead and sign up today.
To make fundraising fun and easy, you can create your own secure webpage at jumprope.org.au
Sign up to share your child’s progress and let the funds roll in. Your child can earn virtual badges along the way and your page will highlight the prizes up for grabs.
Sign up here today: www.jumprope.org.au/parents
Thank you for supporting the Jump Rope for Heart program!
