Swimming carnival assembly

Last week we acknowledged the students who placed at our school swimming carnival.

Students received their ribbons on stage to an audience of their peers and parents.

Congratulations to all students.

Parent teacher interviews

Thank you to all our parents/carers for actively engaging with teaching staff to develop positive relationships during our recent parent teacher interviews. An open and collaborative partnership between home and school is vital to ensuring the success of all of our learners. We value your input regarding your child.

Sun Safe

A reminder to make sure students have their hats in their bags each day.

It is also important that our SCPS students stay well hydrated. The best way to do this is for our students to bring in a clearly labelled drink bottle which they can refill throughout the day. The Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend drinking plenty of water and choosing plain water in preference to other drinks. The daily fluid intake is between 1.2ltr-1.9ltr for children (depending on age) with the majority of this intake consisting of plain water.

Please make sure that the bottle is not made of glass as this is a safety concern when students accidently drop them and they shatter.

Student Voice - Georgie and Will

Each week in this section our 2022 student leaders will be sharing their thoughts and opinions.

Class of the Week - 2L

2022 has certainly been a busy year for 2L. It has been a fantastic start to school life this year.

They have made new friends, learned different routines, new skills and developed maturity and independence.

2L love their Shared Reading activities as part of the morning Literacy Block. They have also been doing Guided Reading with Ms Lewis.

Their reading and writing progress has been amazing this year. 2L have focused on Informative and Recount writing. They have loved writing information reports about different animals and other factual topics.

Most of the class are now facing their fears of making a mistake and are writing about everything they do in class.

2L have used iPads for many different lessons. Their favourite apps are Poplet and Book Creator as they can use them for consolidating their Maths and Literacy skills.

ESBS Planting Day 

South Coogee Public School is extremely proud of all the students that participated in the ESBS Planting Day on Monday 28th March 2022. After almost two years of hard work by Mark Tesoriero and Maria Stathis, the students in Stages 1 - 3 were finally able to put on their gardening gloves and planted some Australian natives that are a part of the critically endangered Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub (ESBS) community. Sadly, there is only 1% of the ESBS community remaining in Sydney and Australia. 

This project is part of the Sustainable Schools Grant Program where our school was luckily enough to be chosen from hundreds of applicants across NSW. South Coogee Public School has created a vital garden for these endangered plants, which will in turn create habitat for endangered local fauna. Additionally, our school plays a vital role in creating green corridors (steppingstones) from East to West for other ESBS communities.

Throughout the term, students have been learning about biodiversity, indigenous ways of caring for country and how the ESBS flora and native fauna contribute to our local environment. The SCPS learners play a vital role in the survival of these critically endangered species and have built personal connections with these plants. They will continue to do so, as they nurture the community throughout their school years and beyond. 

Opportunity Classes (OC) 2023

Opportunity classes cater for intellectually gifted and high potential students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. Students successfully placed will usually have to leave their current school to enrol in a school with an opportunity class for Years 5 and 6.

Parent/carers will need to complete the ‘Intention to apply’ form to notify the school. Parents will then need to apply online from Tuesday 26 April and no later than Friday 13 May 2022. The school is not able to apply on behalf of your child.

Students who are placed then attend the opportunity class full time in Years 5 and 6 at a primary school with an opportunity class. It is a two-year placement program. Students who accept a place in an opportunity class will leave SCPS to attend the school with an opportunity class.

Key Dates:

Tuesday 26 April: online applications open

Friday 13 May: online applications close, late applications are not usually accepted

Thursday 28 July: Opportunity Class Placement Test will be held

Harmony Day - Tuesday 22 March

Harmony Day is fast approaching.

Harmony Day is a day for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity and to share what we have in common.

This year we will be celebrating Harmony Day with class discussions and fun activities. Learners will be sharing and celebrating the diversity of cultures in their class and school.

Don't forget next Tuesday 22 March to wear your National Dress or wear orange clothing.

Each week in this section our 2022 student leaders will be sharing their thoughts and opinions.

Class of the Week - 5/6B

Wow! What a creative class 5/6B is!!! This class has some of the most spectacular artists I have ever come across in my teaching. We love art in 5/6B and we do a different art activity every week. This term we have been focusing on the different elements of art and how we use them to create and compose our art pieces. Below are some examples of the work we have created and what we have been learning about.

Door Monsters by Eitan A

As a very creative and artistic class, 5/6B decided to do something unique as their first artwork: Door Monsters! These monsters would cover our door for the rest of the year. We created our monsters to reflect our appearances and personality traits. For example, if you wore glasses then you might put glasses on your monster, or if you got angry a lot, you might give your monster an angry scowl. The monsters turned out fantastically! There was a great mix of terrifying and adorable monsters! Now they will sit on our door for eternity.

Elements of Art and the Colour Wheel by Issy V

This term in 5/6B our art focus is the elements of art. Our first lesson was the colour wheel. We learnt which colours fell into the categories primary colours, secondary colours and tertiary colours. Our class created a colour wheel that showed these categories of colours with oil pastels, pencils and textas. We drew the circles with a compass and then divided it up into 12 segments, then put a different colour or shade of colour in each segment. Students doing oil pastels blended them together and the artwork was finished!

Monochrome Sweets by Sam N

A monochrome artwork means you use only one colour in your art. With the monochrome sweets, we had to outline our favourite sweets with black oil pastel. Then, we had to spray dye (just one colour of our choice) all over the paper. After that, we had to smudge it all over the paper with paint brushes. Most of us did ice-cream, but some people did some other things. One person did a kit-kat, another did sour gummies.

Complementary Colours & Art Journal Tags by Gabriella G

5/6B recently did an art lesson on complementary colours. We chose 2 or 3 colours that worked well together and looked nice when put together in an artwork. We drew, sketched or coloured our names on a slip of paper using those colours. When we finished we contacted our tags onto our art journals and they looked great.

Warm and Cool Colours by Simon C-R

We have been learning about warm and cool colours in 5/6B. The warm colours are yellow, orange and red. These colours can represent an emotion, like yellow usually means happy. There are also the cool colours which are green, blue and violet. Emotions for blue, a cool colour, include being sad and disappointed. We are doing an art piece about warm and cool colours. The warm colour art piece is a sunrise near the beach and for the cool colours it is a nightscape with a silhouette outline. This is what 5/6B has been up to with warm and cool colours.

Regional Swimming Carnival

On Monday 14th March 2022, our Swimming representatives attended the Regional Swimming Carnival held at SOPAC Homebush. Congratulations to all students as this is such an impressive level to make it to!

Students competed in a variety of races including the relay, freestyle, backstroke and butterfly. All students achieved incredible results on the day competing against a number of different zones a part of the Sydney East Zone.

Defence Kids Club

We have been having a great time in Defence Kids Club over the past few weeks.

Last week we focussed on friendships. We talked about what makes a good friend, and we thanked our friends for supporting us as defence kids! We also did some friendship colouring, drew our friends and read the book “The Rainbow Fish” and decorated our own fish.

This week we are focussing on St. Patrick’s Day. Our K/1 students made leprechaun hats. It has been a pleasure getting to know the defence kids and their friends!

Student Voice and thank you

I am very excited to announce that each newsletter moving forward will feature a new section called Student Voice. This is a space where our 2022 Student Leaders will have an opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions about their experiences at South Coogee PS. This week our 2022 School Captains Charlie and Gabriella have provided their insights.

A big thank you to all of our learners and families for showing great resilence during these raining days at school. It has been great to see how are students and staff have been able to adapt and change when the weather has not been very friendly. Here is to hoping for some sunshine soon. With this in mind please be mindful when dropping off and collecting your children from school as conditions are tricky in this inclement weather.

Student Leadership Assembly

This week we formally acknowledged students from Year 1-6 as part of our Student Leadership assembly. Students from each class received either their Class Captain or Eco Warrior badge in our special zoom assembly. Our Stage 3 Techsperts also received their badge from Ms Owen. This was also the first official function that our 2022 Captains, Vice-Captains and Year 6 leaders hosted and they did a fantastic job. Congratulations to all of the students who will be representing their classmates over this semester.

Staff Wellbeing Week

This week SCPS staff celebrated Staff Wellbeing Week. It is a time to stop and think about the wellbeing of the people who you work with. They pick a week in the term and each day of the week have something different. This week on Monday they got a happy note with a treat, on Tuesday they did a wall sit challenge  with Miss Baxter being crowned the champion. On Wednesday they did a colourful dress up day. On Thursday the teachers are going to take a little more time to relax. Then on the final day they are going to do a special activity to boost their wellbeing. 

This week is a reminder to the staff to stop and think about mental health and wellbeing and the wellbeing of the people around them. It also benefits the student’s wellbeing as the  funny costumes and challenges really made us smile, laugh and realise the staff at SCPS are a lot of fun.

Class of the Week - 1T

1T has had a wonderful start to 2022. We all have taken on the challenges of Year 1 with a positive mindset and a smile. This week we have been learning all about alliteration in our Literacy Block unit. Here are some of our awesome alliteration sentences:  

“Nami and Nora nibble nice nectarines.”

“Caterpillars clean cars.”

“Rylee rabbit rides running rhinos.”

We have also been very creative in Art this week.

Class of the Week - 5/6A

Creative writing in 5/6A

Today we did an activity for narrative planning, this activity was where we planned a story based on a picture on a sheet of paper.

We went in groups of three or two and planned the narrative. We then shared the stories to the class.

We have been doing writing activities like this every week, helping the year fives for Naplan, and helping other students with writing and creativity skills in general.

We had to make a title for the picture, the orientation, complication and resolution. We then had fun sharing it with the class and this activity was very enjoyable.

Activities like these improve key learning skills such as: Public speaking (from reading it to the class), writing stories and building imagination. This activity was exciting and fun all in one. 

We enjoy doing these activities and enjoy continuing to in the future.

Zone Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 24th February, our Zone Swimming representatives attended the Zone Swimming Carnival held at Botany Swimming Pool. We are so unbelievably proud of our students and their performance on the day!

Student’s showed commitment and determination competing in their races. They were also challenged with the constant rain throughout the day and even though they were drenched in the pool and out, they should be so proud of their efforts and resilience.

A huge congratulations and good luck to the students who will be attending the Regional Cross Country Carnival on Monday 14^th March at Sydney Olympic Park.

Principal’s message

As we eagerly wait for news about loosening restrictions, we are diving deep into learning and getting into what is our new normal routines. You would have had the opportunity to hear what is happening in the classroom this week at the virtual ‘Meet the Teachers’ sessions. Thank you to the teachers for their time and preparation in making it an informative and successful event. Thank you also to everyone who was able to connect with us. I’m sure it was nice to see your child’s teacher's face too.

Our leadership and wellbeing programs are also up and running. Weekly sessions are now underway that focus on behaviours, responsibilities, participation, fairness, respect, safety and school values. It is so valuable to continue building and supporting our learners in developing effective leadership skills, positive relationships and, importantly, creating a sense of belonging within the school community.

In keeping our ‘Community Culture’ a focus and continuing to develop a sense of connection to our community, fortnightly 'in school' assemblies will continue for the learners and we would like to invite you to our virtual Week 7 (6/3-11/3) assembly. We will send Zoom links closer to the date. 

As a reminder - all emails to teachers are required to come through the school email. All emails will be treated with full confidentiality and the responses will be made by the member of staff addressed. Our aim is to respond to parents as quickly as possible; we will try to arrange a response on the same or next day. Class of the Week - 2E

2E has had a great start to Term 1! We are all very excited to be back at school learning with our friends and teachers.

It has been a few big weeks of settling into Year 2 and building relationships with each other. Here is what the learners had to say about being back at school.

I enjoy being back at school because:

I get to play games with my friends while I learn.

I learn something new every day.

I play with my friends at recess and lunch.

Maths is fun at school.

I learn with my new teachers.

Exploring my new classroom and playing on the top playground is fun.

Swimming Carnival

On Friday February 4 2020 South Coogee Public School held its annual Swimming Carnival. Due to COVID-19 restrictions the school was only able to take students aiming to compete in the Zone Swimming Carnival.

Despite these challenges, the students who competed showed great sportsmanship and talent in the pool.

We would also like to thank the wider South Coogee community for their understanding in this current environment.

Appointments

We understand that your child/ren may need to be picked up from the school for appointments during school hours. 

Please try and make appointments outside of school times wherever possible. If it is not possible then please collect them prior to lunch starting (1pm) or after lunch finishes (2pm). Finding your child/ren when they are in the playground can take a considerable amount of time.

Lunch boxes

Please label all lunch boxes, containers inside lunch boxes, water bottles, hats and clothing with your child's name. All labelled items will be returned to your child's classroom.

Please remind your child to pack their bags the night before school, and make sure when they leave home they have everything they need for the day. It is disruptive for staff, as well as disturbing your child/ren's learning time, when we have to deliver hats and lunch boxes.

Please make sure your child is in full summer uniform, and at school on time, for the School Photos on Monday.
